The Old Hunstanton Road

Hunstanton Hall

Hunstanton Hall was the ancestral home of the Le Strange family, one of the most powerful Norfolk families in the 15th and 16th centuries. Much of the Hall was destroyed by a fire in 1853 and by another fire in 1951. Consequently, it was divided into apartments and sold, although the Le Strange family retained the park and part of the gardens. The site is under private ownership and not open to the public.

The house was reputedly haunted at one time by Armine Styleman, who inherited the estate from her brother when he died in 1760, until she passed in 1768. The reason for the haunting - a Persian rug! Apparently, she left instructions that her beloved item was not to leave the family after her death. Unfortunately, sometime later someone thought it a good idea to cut it up and give the pieces to the needy villagers. Apparently, Armine was not happy and began haunting the Hall "ferociously" until it was realised why. The pieces were collected in, sewn together, and the haunting ceased.
